17:05 Days on Mars |
Day 17
We did not have time to go down. Kelly suddenly screamed out and failed somewhere. Steven swore. Paul rushed to the place where she was just a second ago. "Kelly, where are you?" he shouted, leaning down. In response, silence. I already started to think that the worst happened. But I, fortunately, was mistaken. “I'm here,” we heard in our headphones the frightened voice of Kelly, “I fell ...Get me out please. Paul, do you hear?" Kelly for some reason spoke to Paul. "I will pull you out. We will pull you out. Just don’t worry and don’t be afraid," Paul began to look around in search of something that could help pull Kelly out. She fell into a narrow shaft and was at a depth of several meters. "It’s good that her spacesuit glows. She’s not too scared," Paul said. I suddenly remembered about Steven. I didn't see him around. "Paul, where is Steven?" I asked, “he is not there.” "Like not. Just been here. Steven answer me!" Steven appeared. "Where have you been? Kelly fell down in the pit"! I shouted. “We must get her out.” "I see. Not blind. I was looking for something to help us go down. Something like a pole or ladder. Nothing found. There is a lot of everything, but it’s of little use." "Kelly, try to get out on the wall. Put your feet against the opposite walls and crawl up." Kelly tried, but immediately fell down. “This is how they crawl out into the cinema but not here,” Paul objected. "Maybe let she jump. Here is a little gravity. Maybe she jumps to the edge, and here we grab her and pull her out," it seemed to me that this is a good idea. The rest thought in the same way. "Kelly do you hear?" Paul asked her loudly. "Yes. I'm going to try now." Kelly crouched and jumped sharply. Another half a meter and we would have grabbed her. “Come on jump stronger,” Paul encouraged her. Kelly jumped again. We did not catch her. Then more and more. To no avail. Then she began to get tired. We realized that she could not jump anymore. Steven suddenly burst out laughing. Probably he lost his nerves. "What use of you here. At first your critical days. Now you fell in the pit. You would better stay at home. What the fuck did you fly to Mars! Why you didn't stay at home! It would be better for all of us". Jason saved the situation. “Kelly, activate the gravitational engine of the spacesuit with your voice,” he said calmly, “do not panic.” Everything will be OK. Kelly listened to him and after a second she was already by our side. We rushed to hug her. “Sorry,” Steven said to her. "It’s OK. I'm not offended. You should not blame yourself." “No one is to blame,” Jason intervened, “the mission to Deimos is canceled.” Return to Mars. "Something happened?" I was alarmed. "Come and see." Without losing a second, we headed back to Mars. Everyone tried to guess what happened while we were on Deimos.
