CHAPTER 5
The last two nights, Olga Pavlovna Polyakova, an English teacher hardly slept. She dreamed of one and the same, strange and weird dream. Well, we should explain, Olga Pavlovna was a Mom of Max Polyakov. So Olga Pavlovna began to dream a strange, but at the same time attracting with its strangeness dream. As if she comes to work of Max, but can not find him in the wreath of corridors and offices.
She keeps asking for directions from his colleagues, all happily show her where to go, but in the end, she discovers that stands alone in the empty echoing hallway. All the doors are closed and only one half open. At this point, heart of Olga Pavlovna was starting to beat faster. She did not know if this was happening in a dream or on real.
With the hope that in the half-open door she will see her dear, beloved son Max she gently comes close to the door and looks inside the office. What she sees plunges her into the total consternation. Instead of windows, a huge black hole, studded with the bright stars. And in the middle, was standing her beloved son Max. But not an adult as he was on real, but a little kid as he was in his childhood. Stretches out his little hands, crying and calling, “Mom, Mom a strange man want to take me away. Mom, I'm afraid of him. Save me!” Even in her dreams Olga Pavlovna understands that to see her adult son again as a little is bad luck a harbinger of troubles.
Her heart stops, compressed, she rushes to Max, hugs, cuddle, trying to keep her own blood from something invisible and terrible. Max in her arms calms down, stops crying. But then Olga Pavlovna realizes that there is not her son in her arms – only the empty air. Max disappeared. Instead of him, at some distance Olga Pavlovna notices a strange creature – at the same time it looked like a man, and like some one else. But one thing Olga Pavlovna knows firmly. In any case she shouldn’t see the faces of the mysterious stranger; otherwise there will be happen something very terrible and irreparable. Even in her sleep she strongly squeezes and shut her eyes, and for greater certainty closes them with both her hands.
So she keeps standing until she feels a light, warm touch to her shoulder. She understands that a mysterious creature touched her. With a cry of horror, Olga Pavlovna in this place of sleep wakes up and sit up in her bed. It was a real nightmare. Her heart was pounding and she, to soothe it used to press her hand to her chest and looking for the soothing drops. She lived alone. Max was studying in the USA. Her younger daughter Julia entered in this year's the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute–KPI. With her husband Olga Pavlovna had not lived for many years.
‘I wish to know, what is going on.’ She whispered fearfully, picking up the pack of cards and begun to reads the cards. She wanted to know what was going on with her family. Cards as it seemed to Olga Pavlovna laid in front of her on the blanket in its usual way. Hoping to see in it the explanation of her weird dreams, Olga Pavlovna habitually began to interpret what she saw. For her daughter Julia everything was fine. She was in a government building, surrounded by bright people, and for the next six months for her youngest daughter cards was not heralded any trouble.
Olga Pavlovna sighed with relief; she began to study the cards in the row of Max. At first glance, nothing unusual and especially bad. Long Road. Government house. Kings, surrounded Max. Bright lady. Olga Pavlovna assumed that it was a girl of Max. She was aware of the existence of Jennifer. Not seeing anything wrong, Olga Pavlovna collected cards and then spread out again. Cards again showed for Max a long journey and the conflict with a strong king. But it will not happen now, but after a while. The only thing that interferes with the usual place of cards, were the aces’ position. The second time they went wrong not as usual went to, and explains their significance Olga Pavlovna could not. The picture was confusing. Max was very far away, but at the same time he was all right.
Gathered cards in the pack, Olga Pavlovna fell in the thoughts. Looked at the clock. It was two 2 a.m. Deep night. It was the right time for obscure dreams. She took from the table, her mobile phone, switched on, found in the address book the number she needed. She did it slowly because not finally decided yet, call or not to call. Olga Pavlovna was going to call the husband of her sister Nicholas. Nicholas served in the SBU – Security Service of Ukraine. He was a colonel, held a high position.
Olga Pavlovna had intended to ask him to find out through his own channels, if it possible, if everything was all right with her son. The fact was that over the past four days, she could not get through to Max. Subscriber all the time was not available. First, Olga Pavlovna did not attach any importance to this. Max was in America. Distance was huge. Anything could happen with communication. But then her called from Kiev her daughter Julia and said that she also tried to contact with her brother, using the webcam. Max was not in the internet, or in any social networks. It was not like him. Definitely something happened.
Olga Pavlovna found a number, by pressed the call button, put the phone to her ear. The late hour wasn’t an obstacle for such a call. Nicholas usually went to bed very late. And now he almost immediately picked up the phone. He was not angry. Even joked:
‘Best regards to teachers! Sat up late, still checking the exercises books? Many F marks put down your students?’
‘Hello, Nicholas. You're kidding me?’ Olga Pavlovna when she heard a cheerful man's voice felt warmth and a desire to smile. She did so. In her heart she immediately felt relief. ‘Don’t mind that I call so late?’ Olga Pavlovna used to call him Nicholas not Nikolai.
'I specifically didn’t go to bed. I was waiting for your call.’ continued to joke the invisible Nicolas.
‘Nicholas could you do me a favor? I do not know, can you help or not, but I have no one to else to ask about it. No news from Max. I can not get through to him. Julia tried over the Internet, too, failed. For four days. Maybe nothing bad had happened
, but I had a dream a strange and not understandable. I have already reads cards. It seems to be nothing wrong, but the heart is restless.’
‘You should be careful with the cards.’ Nicholas chided her. ‘You can call out some kind of evil on you and your family. I’m quite serious. Look, Olga, why we talk about all this on the phone. I'll be near your place in a half an hour and you explain all in detail. Okay?’
‘No, Nicholas.’ Olga Pavlovna replied. ‘I don’t want to bother you at night, tear off from work. Especially come to me from Kiev. I guess you're tired and want to sleep.’
‘I agreed. If I were in Kyiv, it would be difficult to come to you. But luckily, if I may say so, I am now not in Kyiv. I’m just now in your neighborhood. My boys now are exhorting the special vehicles. We carry it in Kyiv, to our headquarters. I think I can find for you a few minutes. Agreed?’
‘It would be great Nicholas, because the bad thoughts all time climb into my head. And here also had a nightmare. How can one not begin to think, worry. If I could hear his voice, get to know that everything is all right with him, I would have calmed down. But now I can’t find place for myself. Well, Nicholas, I'll wait for you. Why, but how is my little sister, Innusya? Did she go the seaside already?
‘Yeah, only to the green sea.’ Nicholas joked. ‘She has got a lot to do at our summer cottage; kitchen garden, beds and so on.’
‘Be careful Nicholas; do not make her a slave like Izaura.’ Olga Pavlovna chided, visualizing her blond and always fun sister among the flower beds and chickens.
‘But what can I do if she likes to plant tomatoes? Bought different seedlings, planted all around with the tomatoes! I asked her, why do you plant so many tomatoes? Isn’t enough of it for you in any vegetable shop or market place? But no, she wants her own tomatoes which grown in her own garden. But the main thing is that all tomatoes should be big and red. In short, the village! Roots! Urban life in Kiev has not changed her at all. Okay, I drove up. Soon I will be at your place.’ The receiver at the other end had been put down
Olga Pavlovna, got out of bed, went to the window. Oh, how she loved the summer! The days are long, long as a year. And the nights are short, like a light sleep. Soon will begin to dawn. Olga Pavlovna prepared for a meeting with Nicholas.
