The Alien Consciousness 2-18
CHAPTER 18
Agents James Kinsley and Larry Hampton met on time at the appointed place and leaving Hampton’s car in a shelter drove on in Kinsley’s car to the place where Polyakov’s car was located. They drove in silence exchanging with rare words. Everything was clear in that situation and they had nothing to say any more. In forty minutes they reached Polyakov’s car. She secretly had been guarded twenty four hours around but the agents before heading to the car drove to the local sheriff with whom they became friends already and agreed that this night they would be on duty near the car.
They used the pretext that at the day time they did not have enough time to complete all of their planned work. Sheriff was only glad. His men since the morning became to get him with their complaints the road police didn’t some kind of trash and they don’t want to do all the dirty work instead of the federal’s agents. If the feds came up with something and have some plan let also their agents would guard the abandoned car. They – road police have a lot of their own work. None of the local policeman is going to be at the beck and to serve the federal agents. Accommodating of the local sheriff, significantly lighten the mood of the agents. The idea slightly clouded with the uncertainty about the success of the entire venture. It is not the fact that the robot will be on the hill this particular night, exactly at that moment when they reach him. It could be that their whole venture in result will be a complete fiasco. Maybe they will not see him anymore at all. But Larry thought that the robot whatever it may be perfect yet was not a human. The robot as well known subdues to the program drawn up by the developers. It followed that he likely still kept roaming around on the same route. The only problem was that nobody of the police officers either before or after their morning’s arrival there notices any suspicious movement near the car. On the one hand it was good that the robot has not been seen somebody else. They needn’t any unnecessary witnesses. But on the other hand it could also indicate that the robot has left this area. But according to Larry there was another option. At an unknown robot maybe simply lowered “battery” and he now was lying somewhere in the grass. If he is right, they will be able to find it with the help of metal detectors. There were in the car’s trunk even such devices. Not reaching a few tens of meters to the scene, James stopped the car, switched off the engine. Both agents silently surveyed the terrain. On the sidelines, in the same place whitened the lonely car in which there were at the time of their disappearance, Leroy and Polyakov. The car didn’t evacuate because still existed slight hope that the kidnappers may return to it. Although phantom hope. If they needed a car the unknown kidnappers have taken it with people. But since the car was thrown – it could only mean one thing, the main target of the kidnappers were people not a car. Who was the aim Leroy or Polyakov they didn’t know yet. It had the right to life also the version that Leroy and Polyakov voluntarily left the car. But even if so, what happened to them next? To answer clearly this question could nobody up to this time. The visual inspection of the area confirmed that there was nobody around. ‘Coming out?’ Larry looked at James. Agent Kinsley nodded: ‘Pick up the hill immediately. Examine the opposite slope. Suddenly we’ll discover some hidden tunnel or passage leading to the secret lab.’ ‘About such a possibility I had not even thought.’ Larry answered. Agents left the car. While Larry took out from the trunk of car some special equipment, James checked with the card for GPS navigator. It of course was beyond their power to check all huge space around but both agents didn’t put before them such a task. The goal was once again more closely examine the melted ground and unusual tree with curved branches; and if everything will be fine also arrange some kind of an ambush on the runaway robot. James with a surprise noticed that even in his thoughts he began to call the mysterious creature “robot” too, although Larry didn’t make him to change his mind. James was firmly convinced that it wasn’t the robot that shot at him. Nobody in the world could create such a robot for now. But he did not want to argue. Larry could change his mind and leave. But stay alone in the prairie, James did not want to. While all their interests coincided. The main thing that united them it was the strong desire to catch the mysterious shooter armed with the laser gun. Equipped with the best ammunition that could offer the FBI, agents Kinsley and Hampton become like the aliens from other worlds themselves. They put on body armor, night vision devices, machines guns, grenades, guns and a lot of bullets. In the hands both agents held the metal detectors. Everything was ready for the beginning of the operation. They examined each other, even jumped. All sat perfectly. ‘So, let’s go?’ James checked the work of night vision devices. Everything was of pale-green color. Larry wearing a helmet on which was mounted the night vision devices, resembled a mutant from the distant worlds. Larry waved forward. ‘Okay. Let’s go. I'm ahead. You cover.’ ‘Okay!’ James agreed Agents, silently, carefully looking around, went to the top of the hill. Even from a distance they noticed yellow spots of light. At first they did not understand the reason, but then guessed. ‘Its melted ground,’ James said. ‘It’s still light up. Maybe the aliens landed there?’ He suddenly added. ‘Maybe. The main thing is that they will not take with them our robot.’ Larry described the words of his colleague as a joke, the simple desire to defuse a bit the tension of situation. Hooked agents did not notice that at a distance, crept and using the bushes and rocks as a cover to them a dark figure was sneaking. It was agent intern Leslie Stevenson who has started implementing her assignment. Slowly, carefully examining the ground, James and Larry moved cautiously to the top of the hill. At last they reached the melted ground in the form of a rectangle. The weak yellow glow clearly allocated to the rest of the dark background. Climbed up the hill, agents did not have time. Leslie who was behind them first noticed how three meters behind the agents a strange creature appeared. It was not like no one familiar to Leslie creature. She immediately understood that the creature was dangerous. She wanted with her alarm cry to warn her colleagues about the danger and even opened her mouth, but at the last moment kept herself. Her scream also will hear the creature which appeared from nowhere. It is not known how it will react. Suddenly, the creature was armed? Leslie already knew that night’s raid of Kinsley and Hampton was directly connected with the strange creature. She quickly but at the same time, trying to produce the minimal noise, stopping and hiding ran to the agents Kinsley and Hampton. Her heart pounded in her chest quicker. Her temples were pressed with the incomprehensible severity. She was afraid that she wouldn’t get to them in time. She was afraid that because of her fault would happen something terrible and an irreparable. ‘Look, my transmitter doesn’t work.’ Larry suddenly said with anger in his voice. ‘Maybe the battery discharged? In the car I’ve checked, everything was normal. I do not understand.’ He turned back and stumbled. Two meters directly behind him stood the strange creature. It had divided into two parts the oval head and three black eyes in a row. Two thin limbs were like separate from the body. The left limb of the creature held a short thing. Larry suspected that it could be a weapon, with which the robot the last time shot and wounded James. ‘Robot ...’ Larry hoarsely croaked, stepping back. At the same time he was afraid to scare off the robot and to provoke with some his action the aggression of runaway robot. Larry did not take his eyes from the robot. Cleared his throat he said in a louder voice. ‘James, he's here…Behind the back...Turns around but only slowly. Do not scare him.’ Hearing Larry’s words agent Kinsley felt that all his body in one moment covered with the cold sweat. He understood that this is not the robot. An obvious for him was the fact that the chances to shoot at robot first neither Larry nor him didn’t have at all. The robot at any case will do it first. But why robot did not shoot just right when he appeared here? Does he want to make contact with them? Does he want to get some information? James had got a faint hope that they both – Larry and he would come back home today safe and sound. But he was wrong. Turning corner of his eye James saw that in Larry pierced at the same time the three or four beams of varying thickness, brightness and density. The night air immediately smelled with burnt flesh. Larry screamed loudly from the unbearable pain and began to fall. But to the ground didn’t fall all his body at the same time. His left hand inexplicably continued to be in the air. From the huge wound with a black fountain struck the blood but it froze in the evening air not having spilled on the ground even a single drop. Larry’s left foot in some inexplicable way continued to be in the upright position. James couldn’t even move stared at the convulsing in death’s throes body of his friend. Agent Kinsley was so scared that seemed couldn’t even breathe. He waited for the next beam which would hit directly right him. The fact that he was armed he had completely forgotten. But the stranger seemed had other intentions for his part. Did not make any shot he disappeared without a trace in the gathering dusk. Along with his disappearance James heard from his left someone weak, like a deep sigh cry and the noise of something fell down. He forced himself to turn. In the sweaty palms he firmly squeezed the gun. A few steps away on the ground motionlessly laid the girl. Looking closely James with astonishment recognized in her Leslie Stevenson! From a nightmarish spectacle she just fainted. James Kinsley helplessly stood between died with the terrible and unexpected death friend and insensitive intern who in some unclear for James way got here. It all happened so quickly and unexpectedly that he was simply unable to understand in full measure what had happened. He stood there not moving and knew only one. He was incredible, miraculously lucky to stay alive. He was alive. And the realization that he was alive was for him at that moment the most important thing. About anything else he hadn’t thought at that moment. He just could not think.
