13:48 Days on Venus |
Day 1
Venus made a lasting impression on me. I looked at the screens and could not understand what feelings I had about what I saw there. Compared to Mars, Venus really looked fantastic and alien to humans. It was the world like nothing familiar to us. Our ship was hovering over the planet’s north pole in search of a landing place. We have circled Venus several times, but psychologically we were not yet ready to plunge into the dense clouds that enveloped the entire planet.
On Mars we chose to land an area at the equator, there was at least a positive temperature at least in summer. Here on Venus on the contrary we were planning to land near to the north or south pole. At the equator, the temperature was more than 400 degrees Celsius, and no one had the desire to be in such a place. Of course, our spacesuits are able to protect us from temperatures of several thousand degrees. But I didn’t really want to spend days in the area where lead and tin melt. "Is it Venus?" Steven asked nervously. "Venus, Venus," Jason answered thoughtfully, "what did you decide? Are we landing?" "Can we stay in orbit?" Masha asked, "Maybe we will send at first our Invincible and few drones to Venus to explore the surface. What if suddenly something will happen down there?" Everyone felt some inexplicable anxiety, looking at the outlines of the continents of Venus, dim in infrared spector. "Yes, the exploration will not hurt us," Paul supported Masha. “If you want, I can even fly there alone on Invincible." "No one will fly anywhere," Jason replied. “Drones will not stand for a long time such a high temperature and influence of the sulfuric acid. Do not forget, on Venus the atmosphere consist mainly of sulfuric acid. It's melts away everything. But at the north pole, the level of acid in the atmosphere is much lower. We will land there." "Okay, come on. We have nothing to wait for. Something must be decided," Paul said. "But can’t we just stay in the orbit and fly back home to Earth?" Kelly asked. Honestly, I also did not really want to descend from clean and transparent space into a dense cover of acid clouds. But I did not say it out loud. I didn’t want that all may think that I was scared. "It is possible, of course,"Jason smiled, "but it's a great chance for us to visit the surface of Venus. Who knows what we can find there." "Or lose," Alex added quietly. "Do, decide," Jason said firmly, "what are we doing?" Steven looked at everyone. I nodded in the affirmative. "Good. We are going to land. Are we the explorers of planets or pancake cheeses?" We laughed. Steven knew how to cheer everyone up. After a second, the ship plunged into the dense clouds of Venus. We were landing. Another ten minutes and our ship landed on the surface of Venus .. You can congratulate us. We have done this, as ones say. But what awaits us next is difficult to say. We will see. Our first day began on Venus.
