Marsiana
CHAPTER 3
First Max wanted to take Marsiana to his mother in Kiev. But in the Ukraine was restless. There was a war. He decided to take the Marsiana as far away from war and misery. There, where the people live happily and freely. Jennifer’s mother lived in Alabama in a small but elegant in its own beautiful town of Huntsville. Max thought Marsiana will be there in full safety. Less than in half an hour they were already standing on the threshold of old, entwined with vines two-storey house.
Night was falling. There was nobody around. Max was captured by the excitement in anticipation of a meeting with his mother in low, which officially she did not have time to become one. But they met once, and apparently liked each other. Marsiana should like here. In this house she will find peace and comfort. USA’s citizenship in the future also doesn’t hurt. ‘Here lives your grandmother, Mrs. Carter,’ Max said quietly with the excitement in his voice. Marsiana looked at everything with wide opened eyes. ‘Mom of my Mommy?’ she asked. ‘Yes.’ Max nodded, still not daring to press the bell. Mrs. Diane Pamela Carter lived alone in her house after the death of her husband, with whom Max had no chance to meet. Jennifer's father left this bustling world long before the time when Max for the first time crossed the Atlantic Ocean. ‘Daddy Max, how do you explain to mother of Mommy Jenny, that I have five years yet? You’ve just met last year?’ Marsiana asked quietly. Max winced at her words. He swept with a slight panic. Really! How could he have forgotten about it? Most likely, Mrs. Carter will not believe that Marsiana her granddaughter, and send them where they came from. ‘What we have to do?’ he mumbled in confusion, looking around as if looking for help or some kind of support. But the bed of beautiful flowers could help with nothing, like an old oak tree; which spread its powerful, curved branches near the iron fence. ‘Do not worry, Dad. I know what to do,’ Marsiana calmed him. ‘You know?’ Max asked incredulously, not even imagining what she can think of that could convince Mrs. Carter, she is her granddaughter. ‘I do,’ Marsiana nodded. On the back of Max ran chill, and his throat was dry. In a split second Marsiana diminished in her size, and in the garden path laid a newborn baby. Max was sweating like he run a hundred-meter race on time with a world’s champion of sprint. The yellow sparkling eyes of Marsiana looked at him. He bent down, gently picked her up, and rang the bell. The sound of footsteps approached the closed door from behind. Pause and he saw a Mrs. Carter. Max was captured by the excitement, and he seemed defensively, handed to her Marsiana. ‘It’s your granddaughter, Mrs. Carter. Marsiana,’ he said with the excitement. When Max was worried, he began to speak with a noticeable accent. ‘Max? You?’ Mrs. Carter shivered, but she took the child. Her slightly wrinkled face stiffened for a moment, then softened and her lips touched a joyful smile. ‘Where is Jennifer? Did something happen?’ she asked, raising her eyes to him. ‘No, Mrs. Carter. She's on a mission. Will not be back soon,’ Max said, anticipating her next question. ‘Max, may come into the house?’ Mrs. Carter suggested. Max wanted was to take advantage of its offer, but changed his mind. It was better to pretend that he was in hurry until he said something wrong or until Marsiana do not try again to grow up in front of Mrs. Carter. Then to explain anything to her would be extremely difficult. ‘Max, your visit to me such a surprise,’ she said, looking intently at him, as if trying to read the real truth in his face or his eye. But Max looked at her directly and calmly. The excitement came down, and he knew what to say. ‘Jennifer asked me to take Marsiana to you.’ ‘She couldn’t tell me this herself? Absolutely, there is no time to visit old mother? I, by the way, worry about her. She could at least call me,’ Mrs. Carter said reproachfully. ‘Jennifer as I said on a mission. Far away. You know what organization she works at.’ Mrs. Carter nodded. ‘Excellent,’ Max sighed with relief. ‘You know, I would have take Marsiana to my parents, but we have a war. I do not know how it ends.’ ‘War – it's awful,’ Mrs. Carter said sincerely. ‘I understand you perfectly. Of course, you can leave the baby with me. One of my friends just looking after newborn children. As I see, you're in a hurry?’ Mrs. Carter asked. ‘You are not mistaken. I’m really very in a hurry.’ ‘To that place where is my daughter now? ‘Almost, Mrs. Carter. Do not ask. I can not tell you the whole truth.’ ‘Oh!’ Mrs. Carter said with irony in her voice said Mrs. Carter, and her face for a moment, looked younger. Max immediately imagined what it was many years ago. “Probably in college she was popular!” flashed through his mind. “Most popular blonde. Queen of the ball and all that!” ‘Can I say goodbye to my daughter?’ he asked after a pause. Mrs. Carter handed him the baby. ‘I’ll meanwhile call my friend to arrange a meeting.’ she said. Max nodded and took the Marsiana in his hands. Mrs. Carter returned to the house. The door shut with a slam. Night was falling. Max remained alone with the Marsiana. He felt a great relief that he was living Marsiana in a safe place. ‘Good bye Marsiana. I have to go,’ he said quietly. ‘I think you will enjoy your new home.’ ‘I have liked it,’ Marsiana replied. Somehow, inexplicably, she again became a child of five years old. Max lowered her to the ground and sat down in front of her. He stroked her hair. Marsiana narrowed her eyes and seemed was ready to purr like a cat. But she did not purr and said something that struck Max, like lightning: ‘Daddy Max, you fly to Arel and Lomma? Do you want to save our mother?’ Marsiana asked. ‘Who is that? What do you mean?’ Max did not understand. He really did not understand what she was talking about. He did not know any Arel. Not to mention the mysterious Lomma. ‘You know them by other names – Noah, and Noahya,’ Marsiana explained. ‘But how do you know them?’ he exclaimed, and immediately feared that Mrs. Carter didn’t hear them. But Mrs. Carter, it seemed, at that moment had a talk on the phone, and heard nothing. Max was wrong. Mrs. Carter wasn’t on the phone. Hiding behind the curtain of the window, she looked with amazement at Marsiana, who was no longer a baby. ‘Just know,’ Marsiana said briefly. ‘Where from? Who told you about them?’ Max insisted. ‘It does not matter,’ Marsiana wasn’t going to tell him the whole truth. ‘I see,’ Max said. He was discouraged; although nothing was clear to him. ‘You're right, my daughter. I'm really going to find Noah and Noahya, or as you call them Arel and Lomma and ask them to help our mother. ‘Mommy Jenny wakes up and will be with us?’ Marsiana happily exclaimed and clapped her hands. ‘I hope,’ Max smiled. ‘Hope so. The main thing is to find them. Oh, I suspect it will not be easy to do.’ ‘Do not worry, Daddy Max. You’ll find them. I’m sure of it. If you strongly want, you are sure to find, and they will help you,’ Marsiana calmed him. ‘You think so?’ Marsiana nodded with her curly hair. “Just like Jenny!” Max thought with a pain. ‘Well, I must go. Listen to Mrs. Carter, I mean your grandmother and do not let yourself offense.’ ‘Do not worry, I'll be okay,’ Marsiana assured him. ‘Say hello to Arel and Lomma, when you find them.’ ‘They know about your existence?’ Marsiana thought for a moment. ‘Yes… already,’ she said with a pause. ‘Really? It’s interesting. Okay, I give them your regards. Let me give you a kiss on the forehead.’ Max kissed Marsiana and saw that on the ground again laid serene and happy baby. He took him in his arms, straightened. All that happened seemed to him in some mysterious dream. But he knew it was not a dream. After waiting a while for decency, in the doorway, Mrs. Carter reappeared. ‘My friend has agreed to keep an eye on Marsiana,’ she said simply, as if nothing had ever seen. ‘So that's great. I have to go, Mrs. Carter. All the best. If it be possible, I will let you know about me…or Jennifer.’ ‘Better If it be my daughter,’ Mrs. Carter she said reserved. Max smiled and said nothing more, quickly went to the gate. Mrs. Carter holding a baby looked into his back. When Max was gone, she went back into the house. She put Marsiana on the couch for a while and stared at it carefully. Marsiana looked at her, but to grow up was not going to. She seemed decided to be just a real baby. ‘Okay,’ Mrs. Carter said, ‘In the morning we’ll see what to do. Buy now it's time to sleep.’ She trembled and turned pale. Marsiana closed her eyes and immediately fell asleep. It seemed that the little girl was fast asleep. Mrs. Carter tiptoed out of the room, went to the table, and took a photo of Jennifer. ‘I wish I know what it all means,’ she said, and put the photo in place. Mrs. Carter felt that she had already love her so suddenly appeared in her life, her granddaughter with all her heart. The night was approaching. It sang a cricket. Everything was quiet and peaceful. When Mrs. Carter left the room, Marsiana opened her luminous eyes, turned into a ten-year old girl and disappeared.
