Marsiana
CHAPTER 8
Mrs. Carter was going to the store to do the shopping.
‘Marsiana can I buy something for you or you go with me?’ she asked her granddaughter. ‘Thank you, Mrs. Carter, I can not. I’m busy,’ Mariana said calmly and looked at Mrs. Carter with her radiant eyes. ‘Marsiana,’ Mrs. Carter spoke gently. ‘I wanted to tell you, please do not call me Mrs. Carter. I'm your grandmother. Do you understand? Call me a grandmother or granny without “Mrs. Carter”.’ Mariana nodded. ‘Fine, grandmother, Mrs. Carter,’ she said, and looked straight into the eyes of an elderly lady. Mrs. Carter sighed and shrugged. ‘As I see, none can change you. I wonder how you call your parent.’ ‘Daddy Max and Mommy Jenny,’ Marsiana said. ‘Why not just Mom and Dad?’ Mrs. Carter surprised because she who did not understand anything. Marsiana smiled slyly. ‘I do not know. But I have to.’ ‘Have to for whom?’ ‘I do not know. I only know that this is necessary.’ ‘Well,’ Mrs. Carter retreated. ‘So what do you want me to buy for you? Magazines for the little girls or some clothes?’ ‘Thank you, grandmother, Mrs. Carter. I’ve got everything. Buy me a flower seeds.’ ‘Flower seeds?’ Mrs. Carter surprised. ‘Yes, flower seeds. I want to plant in the flowerbed.’ -‘Who in July sowing flowers,’ Mrs. Carter surprised again. - Too late. They do not germinate.’ ‘Do not worry, grandmother, Mrs. Carter. My flowers will do it,’ Marsiana assured old lady made emphasis on the word “my”. Mrs. Carter looked at the girl and decided not to argue with her. For some reason she did not doubt that the seeds sown by Marsiana, sprout not only in July but even in mid-winter. ‘Seeds of what flowers do you prefer?’ ‘Any. But it would be better of big and colorful,’ Marsiana said. ‘I understand. I'll try not to forget.’ Mrs. Carter went shopping but Marsiana intently was thinking about something. Finally, she took a decision and pretty smiled. The day has just begun. It was still to come. She went out into the street and began to look at the flowers that bloomed last night. There were many, and Marsiana tried as best as possible to look at them and remember every flower. * * * In the evening, when Mrs. Carter was asleep Marsiana decided to do a good deed. On tiptoe, trying not to wake the old woman, she quietly made her way to her room and stood next to the bed, on which slept Mrs. Carter. Some time Marsiana carefully studied the wrinkled face of Mrs. Carter, and then began to look at pictures with the image of a young and pretty girl. It was Mrs. Carter during her distant, violent youth. After reviewing all the photos Marsiana went back to the bed of Mrs. Carter. Gaze of unusual girl seemed to become attached to the face of an old woman. And then something unusual began to happen. Wrinkled face of Mrs. Carter beginning flatten, get younger. On the yellow pigmented spots in the cheeks blush appeared again, the skin became firmer and youthful. All body of Mrs. Carter get younger turning her into the exact copy of the girl shown in numerous photos. Decrepit, almost imperceptible chest lifted, acquired seductive forms. Purple, sparse hairs on the scalp become thick, curly and long. Twenty minutes later it was all over, and on the bed laid quite different Mrs. Carter. Perhaps she felt something, because suddenly opened her eyes and sat up in the bed. ‘Marsiana what are you doing here?’ she cried with scare. ‘Has something happened? Fire? Thieves?’ Marsiana shook her head. ‘No fire. Thieves in the next street, but the police are on their way there,’ she silently lifted to Mrs. Carter the mirror. Mrs. Carter took it, looked up and froze. Almost a moment she stared at her image, and she thought she was asleep, and again in a dream turned into a young and beautiful girl. ‘How?! What is it?!’ she exclaimed in shock, touching with her hand her face. ‘That can not be on real. You did it?’ she looked at Marsiana. ‘I,’ Marsiana said simply. ‘But how? That's impossible!’ Mrs. Carter thought she was still asleep, and she dreams of a beautiful, magical dream. She again turned into the young girl. It was the secret dream of every old woman. ‘This is my gift to you,’ Marsiana said. ‘You let me live in your house, and asked me about nothing. ‘So I decided to thank you.’ ‘I’ll be young for a long time or just until the morning?’ ‘Long.’ ‘But neighbors? What do I tell the neighbors?’ ‘You’ll tell them that you are the eldest daughter of Mrs. Carter, Audrey. Mrs. Carter herself went round the world cruise,’ Marsiana seemed already thought of everything. ‘But you? Who are you to me? Daughter?’ ‘I would prefer to be your niece,’ Marsiana said. ‘Agree,’ the former Mrs. Carter, but now Audrey jumped out of bed and ran to the large mirror. She spun in all directions in front of the mirror. She held her hands over her young, slim and spring body. It seemed to her that she was still asleep, or if did not sleep, then she was dreaming in reality. To believe that she somehow inexplicably again was young and attractive she could not. She could not, and was afraid. She was afraid that all suddenly will disappear, and again she sees in the mirror the old woman with whom she resigned long time ago. But the minutes passed, and all remained in the same place. She did not turn in the old woman. ‘Probably after midnight,’ she whispered to herself rather than to Marsiana. ‘Granny Mrs. Carter – it's not a fairy tale of Cinderella. Nothing bad will happen to you neither after midnight nor tomorrow or even the day after tomorrow or in a month,’ Marsiana assured the young woman. Mrs. Carter ran up to her, hugged and kissed. ‘I'm so glad. You just can not imagine. I'm happy!’ Marsiana smiled in her turn. It was nice to see in the house of Mrs. Carter, a young energetic and attractive woman, but not an old lady with a wrinkled, haggard with the disease and lived years face. All changes Marsiana done more for herself than for Mrs. Carter. ‘I also glad that you like, Mrs. Carter,’ she said. Younger-looking woman suddenly thought, then smiled brightly. ‘No, I cannot sleep anymore. I just can not sleep. Perhaps I'll go to a bar or even a restaurant. I haven’t been there for a thousand years yet. I’ll remember my youth!’ ‘You are right. Go!’ Marsiana supported her. ‘You seriously think I have to go?’ Mrs. Carter surprised. ‘Of course I do. Why not,’ Marsiana smiled. ‘You are now a young, attractive woman.’ ‘You're right,’ Mrs. Carter began hastily assembled as though this depended on how long she will stay young. ‘But I’ll not again turn into an old woman there?’ she asked suddenly. ‘I do not want to scare people.’ ‘You are now Audrey, not your mom, an older Mrs. Carter. At least in front of strangers I'll call you just like that. Your mother, as I said, went on a cruise.’ Marsiana said calmly. ‘Excellent,’ Mrs. Carter kept on her dressing. When all was ready, she drank some vodka for courage and said: ‘How do I look?’ ‘Chic.’ ‘Are you serious?’ ‘Absolutely!’ Marsiana assured her. ‘Then I go?’ ‘Go. Have fun.’ ‘Thank you. Oh, well you yourself will not be afraid?’ ‘Don't worry, grandmother, Mrs. Carter Aunt Audrey. I'll be OK.’ ‘No doubt. Well, Marsiana, eat and go to bed. I so grateful, so grateful to you, I have no words to express all the feelings that I'm feeling now,’ Mrs. Carter once again kissed Marsiana and left the house. Marsiana did not want eat and went to her room. Earlier than in the morning she shouldn’t expect a return of rejuvenated Mrs. Carter. ‘Poor people,’ she said quietly, lying in her bed. ‘Self-confident when they young and healthy, and helpless and miserable when they got old.’ Marsiana closed her eyes and tried to sleep. Mrs. Carter’s cat which was sitting on a window sill guarded her dream.
