Jennifer died. She gave the birth to their daughter, called her Marsiana and died. Max did not realize at first what had happened. He stood motionless beside the bed, holding in his arms a tiny, wet body just born daughter, and stared at Jennifer. He waited for Jennifer opens her eyes, smile, say something, ask and wants to hold her newborn daughter. But Jennifer did not move and Max began to realize that happened something terrible and irreparable.
Slowly, as if afraid to disturb her peace, firmly clutching daughter’s body, he began to back away from the bed on which seemed to sleep Jennifer. He already knew what had happened, and that thought made him very scary. In the eyes of Max appeared tears, the whole body trembled. He wanted to weep and cry at the same time. But something restrained him. He just ran out of the chamber and stopped, not knowing what to do next. They were on Mars. It was here, on a red, desolate planet Jennifer decided to give the birth to the child. Max did not mind because he knew, it was useless to argue with her, and returning on Earth in the hospital also did not make sense. They would be there immediately grabbed by the security services, and Jennifer would have to bear if not in the hospital but for certain in a prison. The fact what would wait on her there he did not even want to think about. Max stood motionless in front of the ship, and seeing nothing, looking straight ahead. The tiny body of his daughter trustingly leaned against him. She did not weep, did not cry, as if aware that with her mother happened something irreparable. ‘How is it so?’ Max said, took a few steps forward, and dropped to the ground next to the red pyramid they built some time ago. ‘It can not be true. She is alive. Maybe she fall asleep or lost consciousness. I'll go and see.’ he said strongly, intending to get up. But he did not do it and remained sitting on the ground. He just was afraid once again see Jennifer lifeless, unfamiliar and motionless. Max sat and thought of nothing. The ship, which they got from Tondor, was near. They only arrived yesterday on Mars. He even did not have time to check destroyed partly by the kregls the spacecraft or at least pay attention to it. Jennifer said: “We'll see tomorrow.” Tomorrow came, but Jennifer would not see anything. Thinking about it was terrible, and Max tried not to think, but did not understand what he should do along, and more over with a newborn baby in his arms. And what to do with Jennifer? He suddenly realized clearly that no matter how he did not want to, but he will have to once more go back aboard the ship and meet Jennifer. He can bury her here, or take... “With me? But where?” he said silently to himself. “I do not know what I shall do. Maybe fly to my parents? Leave them a baby. The idea was good, but what I do then? Where I can hide a ship?” for these and other questions, he could find no answer. ‘Lord, why it’s all happening to me!’ he suddenly said. ‘Tondor, where are you? Give me Jennifer back. You can do it!’ he exclaimed in despair, sincerely hoping that now will appear Tondor or his beloved Jennifer will come out of the ship, alive and healthy. But the miracle did not happen. Tondor did not appear, Jennifer did not come out. Max decided to wait until the evening, and then if nothing changes, go up to the ship, bury Jennifer near the pyramid, and after that decide what to do. About himself, he was not worried. He was worried about the baby. He suddenly remembered that the new born baby often have to feed, wash and protect. He could do absolutely nothing of it, even though he has the younger sister. To the surprise and relief of Max the tiny little girl didn’t cry and most of the day slept soundly. She seemed to understand, in what a difficult situation was her father, and did not want to give him more trouble. When the sun in the Martian’s sky was on its afternoon pass, Max has come a bit from a terrible loss, and somehow started thinking. However, his thoughts were still confused, and he how hard he tried; he could not, and did not want to believe that Jennifer really gone, and he was left alone with the child. And where, on Mars! More ridiculous situation it was difficult to imagine. He thought it was very unfair to him, wanted someone to blame, somehow put things back. In general, he wanted that Jennifer was again close, but she was not. The severity of the loss gradually reached into his mind and tears more and more ran down his cheeks. He cried without realizing that he was crying, wiping on the face the bitter tears. ‘Jenny, Jenny.’ Max whispered in a new fit of sorrow. ‘No, I'll not take you back to Earth. You no longer belong to that world. Your place is here, on Mars!’ suddenly he exclaimed emphatically, getting to his feet. ‘Your beautiful body will not get the earth’s worms. And here you have kept forever. That's all I can do for you.’ Max realized that says that, because deep down hoping that sooner or later arrive Tondor and enliven Jennifer. Maybe clones or does it in some other way. Max did not care, for him the most important thing was that Jennifer was alive again. He did not understand, and refused to understand what could happen to her. All was well, childbirth passed normal, there was no even bleeding. It all what happened seemed to him some kind of absurdity. And the more was time passing, the more he was strengthening in this opinion. But got on board the ship and again see dead Jennifer, he has not yet dared. But after all, he did it. Max carefully handed Jennifer out the ship and gently lowered to the ground near the pyramids. Found her locket, he blew the sand of it and put it on her chest. It seemed Jennifer just slept with quiet and serene sleep. After standing a moment, Max leaned over and gently picked up the tiny body had just been born and orphaned little girl and sat down with her near Jennifer. Thinking of nothing he set down the whole day. * * * The girl grew quickly. She did it very fast. In the evening, she said the first word –“Daddy.” An hour later, the first sentence: ‘Daddy, where's Mommy?’ she asked with a thin voice. Heart of Max sank with grief. His eyes filled with the tears again. ‘Mommy is asleep,’ he said hardly. ‘You, too, have a sleep.’ ‘Okay, Daddy,’ little girl closed her eyes and fell asleep. Max frantically pressed to his breast a tiny, warm body, and silently wept. An hour later Marsiana woke up. ‘Daddy, where's Mommy?’ she repeated her question. ‘In the sky,’ Max said. He still did not sleep and just sat, staring blankly in front of him in the Martian’s night. ‘In the sky?’ little girl repeated thoughtfully after him. ‘Yes, in the sky.’ ‘What is the sky?’ Marsiana asked. Max pointed up. Marsiana looked at the bright points of the stars. ‘I do not see my mother.’ she said pitifully. ‘Your Mom is away in the sky. You can not see her,’ Max explained. ‘But she is there. ‘But where are we, Daddy?’ Marsiana asked a new question. Strange, but Max wasn’t surprised that just born baby was talking to him. He even was pleased. He did not feel better alone. ‘We're on the planet. On Mars.’ he explained. ‘Mummy is on the planet, too?’ Marsiana asked. Max sighed. ‘Yes, on the planet.’ ‘But on which exactly? On this or on that?’ Marsiana with her little finger pointed to the stars in the Martian’s sky, as if trying to guess where exactly was her Mommy. ‘Somewhere,’ Max replied. ‘There are a lot of planets. There are also stars. All these bright points are stars and there are planets around them. But they are far away and we can not see them.’ Marsiana did not answer. She just closed her eyes and fell asleep again. Max also dozed off. So the night passed. * * * In the morning Max buried Jennifer near the pyramid. He did not want to leave her here alone, but also to carry on the Earth did not want too. Marsiana during the night grew very much and looked like a four year’s kid. She stood beside Max on her thin legs and held his hand. Strange, but she wore an unusual clothes, which he had never seen on the ship before and did not know how Marsiana found that clothes. ‘So long, Jenny,’ he said hoarsely, and squeezed hand of Marsiana. Excitement caught his breath, and he could no longer speak. He turned back to the ship. The girl remained standing on the spot. ‘Come, Marsiana,’ Max said. ‘We're leaving that place. We have nothing to do here any more.’ ‘Where?’ little girl asked. ‘We’ll return on Earth. To home. Earth - it is such a planet,’ he hastened to explain it, without waiting for the girl’s question. ‘Such as Mars, but your grandmothers live there. It's time for you to meet them.’ ‘I see. The Earth is also in the heaven?’ Marsiana asked. ‘In the sky. Only in another sky’ ‘They look like you and me?’ she asked. ‘In what sense?’ Max did not understand. ‘Along on the entire planet too.’ Marsiana said. ‘Who?’ ‘Our grandmothers,’ Marsiana explained. ‘We're two people on Mars, but two of them on Earth.’ The naiveté of Marsiana caused on Max’s face an involuntary smile. ‘No, dear, besides our grandmothers in the world there are still a lot of other people. Yes, you yourself will soon see everything.’ Marsiana shook her head. ‘I do not want. I do not want to fly there. I do not like it.’ ‘But you have never been there before.’ Max was surprised. ‘I still do not want go there. There's a bad place, and a lot of bad people.’ Max could not deny it though he couldn’t think out anything else. Where except Earth he could bring her, on the Jupiter or Pluto? But even so what they’ll do there?’ ‘We’ll not stay there for a long time. You only become acquainted with your grandmothers and we fly somewhere else. After all, you are their only granddaughter.’ Marsiana seemed to have thought of his words. ‘But Mars?’ she asked. ‘I like the planet Mars.’ ‘Mars is not going anywhere. We'll be back here at any time you wish. Come on, Marsiana.’ Marsiana shook her head. ‘Mom flies with us?’ she asked. ‘Mom can not. Mom will stay here.’ ‘I do not mean the one that is in heaven, I'm talking about this,’ Marsiana pointed to a fresh grave. Heart of Max ached with pain. He did not want to leave Jennifer on Mars, but nothing better could think. ‘Max Daddy, do not leave my mother Jennifer here. She will be here sad and lonely,’ Marsiana said in the official voice. ‘Fine. We'll keep Mom on the Moon. This is much closer to the Earth, and when you are with your grandmother, at night you can often look at the Moon and at your mother. She, too, will see you from the sky and you'll always be together.’ Marsiana pretty smiled. Max’s idea she liked. Where is the Moon, and what it looked like, she for some reason did not ask. As if she knew yet. Max after some hesitation, dared to ask Marsiana a question which tormented him: ‘I wonder why sometimes you just call me Daddy, but sometimes "Dad Max", and mother not just mother, but "Mommy Jenny," as do all normal children? What does this mean?’ Marsiana suddenly smiled. ‘It should be so Dad Max. It depends on whether you act in proper way.’ ‘I see,’ Max said, although nothing was clear to him. Sometimes he was afraid of his daughter, who looked like a girl of four years. ‘Take Mommy and fly,’ Marsiana said, as if she could not wait to leave Mars and get acquainted with her grandmothers. So they did.
